While there is always much debate on how much looks matter when it comes to success and how people should overlook these things, it isn’t very easy to because the way you dress does say a lot about a person. If you want to succeed, then it’s not just about how you come across to other people, but it’s about how you feel in yourself. If you feel good and confident then you exude this, you act differently, you act confident and you come across well to others. So whether it’s for an interview, a date, a meeting or even to go to the gym, if you’re going somewhere or to something where you want to succeed, then dressing for success is very important.
You Will Be More Productive
It may sound silly, but dressing for success and with success in mind will make you more productive. Whether this is at work, or you have your new Adidas 4D in SVD and are ready for your date, or you have a new running top. When you dress for the occasion, and you feel good, then you are more in the mindset to achieve and do well in whatever it is you’re doing. When you dress more casually, you don’t perform as well at work; it can make you less productive. Have you ever had a dress-down day at work and found that people are more relaxed and think it’s a fun day which you don’t have to take as seriously as you would any other day. While it’s nice to feel relaxed at work, dressing for the occasion and making the effort to look the part in whatever it is you’re doing, will increase your focus on the help you to succeed.
People Look at You Differently
Looking your best for yourself should always be just that, for yourself. You should only dress to make you feel good and no one else, however, what it does do is show others that you take pride in yourself, which will make a good impression and help you to succeed. If you are a business professional, then you will want to be treated as a business professional, and dressing for the part improves people’s perception of you and the business you represent
You Confidence Will Increase
As mentioned before, when you look good, you feel good, and whether it’s putting on a glamorous dress for a ball or a sharp suit for a big meeting, it will make you feel more confident about the occasion.
Your Clothing Promotes You
What you wear is the first thing people see of you, so how you dress is marketing and self promotion, and your clothes need to attract whatever it is you want to succeed in. When first meeting someone, you don’t have much else to go on apart from what you see and neither to they. The way you present yourself is fundamental to showing who you are and giving off the right impression. We live in a world that is very judgmental; we are quick to make assumptions and to categorize individuals based on what we see. The clothes that we wear and the way we groom ourselves change the way other people hear what we say. Just take a minute to think about what you think of others and the way they are dressed, who would you listen to more? Who would you ask for advice if you weren’t sure where to go and needed some help when out in public?
It Shows Attention To Detail
If it is obvious that you have put time and effort into the way you dress, then others will know that you pay attention to detail. They will know that you care about things and take pride in the things that you do.
There’s Science Behind It
While it’s a lovely and catchy rhyme to say “dress for success,” there is not only truth but science behind it. A study by Lefkowitz, Blake, and Mouton from 1995 showed that people wearing suits portray a form of authority. An experiment was conducted where someone in a city center crossed the road against traffic; when this person was dressed in a business suit, three-and-a-half times as many people followed him compared to when he was wearing a work shirt and trousers. If you want to succeed and want people to listen to you and pay attention to you, then how you dress does matter.
