Moving Across State Lines Need Not Be a Nightmare
It’s easy to underestimate the amount of time and effort necessary to make the cross-country move successful. Most people find out the hard way, and it leaves them tired and frustrated.
Hiring reliable cross-country movers is the best decision you can ever make. Most people are caught unaware of just how taxing it can be. Harris found out the hard way when he found a dream job 2,000 miles away.
Harris, a father of three kids, was interviewed for a senior programming position and got the job. The only catch was that he had to uproot his life and move his family to Providence from their current home in Phoenix. Since the company had flown him in for the interview, he made the fatal error of underestimating the distance by road.
A short deadline
It was apparent during the interview that Harris was the right man for the job, and the company was eager to hire him. The hefty pay raise and other perks that came with the position only fueled his motivation to join the dream employer. So he committed to reporting to his new position within three weeks, and this turned out to be a big mistake.
He planned to turn in his two weeks’ notice to the current employer and then relocate over the next week. He figured that he could easily manage 300 miles a day and cover the two thousand miles in about a week. On paper, that was a solid plan. Or so he thought.
They’d spend the first two weeks packing up their possessions and avoid the last-minute rush. They’d commence their journey early Saturday morning and spend the next seven days on the road to arrive at their new home the following weekend. That meant the family had the entire weekend to settle in, and Harris would report to his new position well rested on Monday of the fourth week.
Scuttled plans
The first part of his plan went on like clocked work, and the Harris family started the journey on a beautiful Saturday morning. Unfortunately, their well-laid plan failed to account for one significant factor: traveling with children. Unlike adults, children can’t buckle down and grit their teeth for the greater good.
Cramped at the back of the family’s station wagon, the children soon got bored after the novelty of being on the road for hours wore off. After that, they got to all manner of mischief, making the trip a nightmare. It didn’t help that they had rented a truck to ferry their possessions.
Shifted timelines
That meant the parents had to take turns driving the station wagon and the hired truck. Their target of covering 300 miles a day soon faded into oblivion as the need to make numerous pitstops to appease the kids became a top priority. Long story short, the journey ended up taking twice the time as the family couldn’t do more than 200 miles a day.
Harris reported to his new job a week late worn and tired from all the driving and babysitting on the road. Since he was a catch, his new employers quite understood of his situation. Harris learned his lesson and now knows better than to undertake such a feat by without the help of an expert moving service.
